Story
A Time Called You races through decades of shared memories: paper fortune tellers, candy necklaces, arcade games, cassette tapes, pagers, MySpace and empty pandemic streets. Beneath its rapid-fire delivery and driving acoustic rhythm is a more personal realization: we rarely recognize the final time something happens while we are still busy living it.
Lyrics
Yeah, look
In the classroom, it’s early fall
Paper fortune teller and football
Pencil fights with a number two
Slap hands, I’d never lose
As scrubs, we lived in fear
Crossed the senior lawn on a dare
Mood rings, eight-track jams
Drive-in speakers, CB bands
Star Wars, checkered vans
Ditto jeans and painter pants
Always somewhere far to go
Stayed out till the streetlights glowed
Candy Nerds, Big League Chew
Mongoose bikes and Rubik’s Cubes
G.I. Joe and Cabbage Patch Kids
Members Only jackets, jelly flips
Walkman, music on the go
Dr. Demento on the radio
Donkey Kong at the arcade
Ten thousand points, one more play
Super Soakers, rollerblades
Beanie Babies, thought they’d pay
Dial-up screeching in the hall
Pagers, chat rooms, AOL and all
Oh, and the world’s rolling on
Rolling on, yeah
Taking us further every day
The voices we remember
Fade to echoes on the way
Echoes on the way
But the songs that used to know us
Still come drifting through the room
And for a moment I’m back there
To a time called you, oh, oh, oh
Time called you, yeah
Alright, listen
Razor scooters, trucker hats
Sharpie titles, CD stacks
Click-wheel circles, MP3s
MySpace top eight following me
Plastic guitars, rock-star dreams
Wii remotes through TV screens
Six-second loops and fidget spins
Angry Birds on morning trains
Pocket monsters filled the parks
Block-built empires after dark
Everything came on demand
Everything slipped right through our hands
Oh, and the world’s rolling on
World’s rolling on
Taking us further every day
The voices we remember
Fade to echoes on the way
Echoes on the way
But the songs that used to know us
Still come drifting through the room
And for a moment I’m back there
To a time called you, oh, oh, oh
Empty roads, homemade bread
Paper masks and unmade beds
Store shelves bare, touch grass
Nobody knew how long it’d last
Wordle grids and cable news
Vintage fits and thrift-store shoes
Crypto coins and digital land
Streaming life straight from our hands
Everything we threw away
Repackaged for another day
The future showed up right in line
While we were busy at the time
History isn’t only wars
Or dates we memorized
It’s the smell of your parents’ house
The kitchen light at five
It’s everything that ended
Before we knew to mind
The last time passed unnoticed
We were busy at the time
Oh, and the world’s rolling on
Oh, rolling on, yeah
Taking us further every day
Oh, rolling on, yeah
Taking us further every day
Farther every day
The voices we remember
Fade to echoes on the way
Echoes on the way
But the songs that used to know us
Still come drifting through the room
And for a moment I’m back there
To a time called you, oh, oh, oh
Called you, oh, oh, oh
No one said, “Remember this”
Busy at the time
No one knew what we would miss
Busy at the time
Running down tomorrow’s line
We didn’t know we loved it
We were busy at the time
We didn’t know we loved it
We were busy at the
